Quick guide to temporary white on
red signs at road and street works
(Road Works)
The purpose of this Traffic Advisory Leaflet is to assist practitioners who need temporary white
(legend) on red (background) signs for certain situations at road or street works.
Proper use of signs is vital to their
effectiveness in terms of guiding or regulating.
Over-provision of signs can have a detrimental
impact on the environment and can dilute
more important messages if they result in
information overload for drivers....
These design principles form the basis of the
directional signing system which is prescribed by the
Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions
1994. When published, the new Chapter 2 of the
Traffic Signs Manual will give more comprehensive
guidance on the design of signing schemes and
include topics not covered by this document...
Temporary traffic signs may be erected for a
limited period to guide traffic going to special
events, such as major sporting events, shows or
other public gatherings that are expected to
attract large volumes of traffic. This leaflet gives
advice on the circumstances in which these
signs may be used, their design, construction
and mounting...
Traffic signs manual chapter 2 determination of x-height
(Traffic Signs Manual)
The x-height of the sign depends on the distance the driver is from the sign
when he/she starts to read it. It is taken that, on average, at a distance of 60
metres the x-height should be 100 mm (it is proportional so that at a distance
of 30 metres the x-height would need to be 50 mm)
Guidelines on the correct use of regulatory signs prescribed by the traffic signs regulations. These include prohibited turns, waiting and loading restrictions, bus and cycle lanes etc. There is also a comprehensive section dealing with the signing of speed limits.
Warning signs are used to alert drivers to potential danger ahead. They indicate a need for special caution by road users and may require a reduction in speed or some other manoeuvre.
Traffic signs manual chapter 8 (part 1) road works and temporary situations - design (2009)
(Traffic Signs Manual)
